Patrick Brower has spent years refining and honing his comic retail expertise (he calls the process "refoning", possibly trademarked), and he's put all his lessons learned to work for Challengers. If you need someone at a comic store to be able to go from amiable to gregarious straight on through to winning, all while divining the book you've needed your whole life without realizing it, Patrick's your guy.
Day One The counters arrived!! We made it. We are now a chain! 2 stores! Hear about the final week of prep and the first day of sales. No Black Friday Sales this year. Batman is your friend, but only when no one else is listening. Challengers-exclusive Diamond problems for the week. 2 of ‘em! Industry-wide Diamond issue for the week. Protect that data!! Dark Knight The Golden Child vs China. Arrgh! Here there be (internet) pirates! Thanks, Patrons! We’ve added another 2-Store/1-Day creator signing! With… **** ******!
Recorded with a Q-Mic! Can you hear the difference? We say we’re not going to talk about Blue this week, but we totally talk about Blue this week. This was recorded on Dal’s birthday. Happy Birthday, Dal! We’re very excited for our Glow signing to happen because we’re fans of the creators. We’re MORE excited for our Glow signing to happen so all of the phone calls will stop. Denying yourself something until you feel you’re earned it, instead of living your life. Daniel Warren Johnson is the first creator signing at BOTH locations in the same day! Whereas Brian Crowley will be the first signing we host at Blue. Are the comics coming out the week of Christmas enough to make people want to make the trip in on a holiday week? Dal digs Image’s Olympia. It feels like less “Conversation” happens in Challengers pertaining to actual comic series. The theme of Tom King’s Batman, as succinctly summed up by Dal. Diamond has a lot of programs to help new stores/new locations, and Dal got to figure them all out! R.I.P. Tom Lyle.
Recorded in Challengers River North! We’re actually pleased with our progress thus far. Less than 2 weeks until opening day! R.I.P. Tom Spurgeon. Orbital Comics in London has stopped carrying single issue new comics. There was a time when we considered that, too.
An update on the first week of prep for Blue. Boy, no Chicago news source cares about a new comic book shop. Subscriber emails vs. subscribers actually reading emails. The reactions for Dawn of X #1’s. Superman is coming out! Where should we advertise the opening of Blue? Are we having a Black Friday Sale (at Red) and if so, what’s on sale?
CHICAGO, IL (November 4, 2019) – Challengers Comics + Conversation today announced the upcoming opening of their second comic book retail location at 750 N. Franklin St, Suite #103, in Chicago’s River North neighborhood.
Already open for just shy of 12 years in Bucktown, Challengers owners Patrick Brower and W. Dal Bush feel the time is right for expansion. “Comic books and graphic novels are better now than they’ve ever been, and the subject matter is so diverse that reading a ‘comic book’ is now an everyday occurrence for more people than ever before,” says Brower. “Having started Challengers in Chicago and seeing so many people buy their first comic is such an amazing feeling that we want to do more of it.”
W. Dal Bush is a life-long comic book fan and a long-time comic book retailer. “Patrick has been selling comics for over 29 years, and I’m coming up on 28,” says Bush, “But every day still feels new and exciting with the quality of material that is being created today.”
Challengers is a comic book store, not a collectibles store. They don’t sell priceless artifacts; they don’t sell investments. They sell reading material; and, in their opinion, today’s comics and graphic novels are the best form of entertainment available. Since opening their first location in March 2008, Challengers has received “Best Of” awards from the Chicago Reader, Chicago Magazine and Newcity, and was awarded the comic book industry’s version of the Academy Award in the form of the Will Eisner “Spirit of Comics” Retail Award.
"Our family's been in River North for 60 years. I'm thrilled to have Challengers as a neighbor. Good guys, great brick and mortar business and more foot traffic," said Guido Nardini, co-owner of Club Lago restaurant and bar. “Can't wait to raise a glass to their arrival. Did I mention my brother and I are their customers? Our commute just got very convenient...”
“I've been going to Challengers since they first opened,” said James VanOsdol, long-time Chicago on-air personality (WKQX, WLUP, WGN, WXRT). “The vibe is always welcoming, and I completely trust Patrick and Dal to help me find titles I'm going to love. Their enthusiasm for comics is undeniable.”
The River North Challengers will be open for business on Friday, November 29, 2019, at 11:00am.
